Reflections from Toulouse - The Future of European Aerospace Manufacturing

ASG Aerospace CEO Simon Weston has reflected on the opportunities facing British aerospace manufacturers following a visit to Toulouse, where industry leaders gathered to discuss the future of civil aviation, defence cooperation and European manufacturing supply chains.

The ADS Toulouse Annual Event brought together representatives from the British and French aerospace industries to examine industrial collaboration, emerging technologies and the next generation of aircraft.

For ASG Aerospace, a precision engineering group supplying major international aerospace programmes, the discussions offered valuable insight into the changing requirements of aircraft manufacturers and their suppliers.

"Toulouse is always an interesting place to visit because you are surrounded by businesses shaping the future of aerospace," said Weston. "What struck me during the discussions was the extent to which the industry's future depends on the strength of its supply chains. Aircraft manufacturers have ambitious plans, and delivering those plans will require continued investment and close cooperation with specialist suppliers."

The conference examined the next generation of single-aisle aircraft, Airbus's Wings of Tomorrow initiative, hydrogen propulsion and emerging manufacturing technologies.

Weston believes these developments present considerable opportunities for established aerospace manufacturers.

"The next generation of aircraft will place significant demands on the manufacturing supply chain. Improvements in efficiency, new propulsion technologies and advances in aircraft structures all have implications for the components we manufacture and the processes we use."

ASG Aerospace has invested more than £10 million across its operations over the past two years, expanding manufacturing capacity and strengthening its specialist engineering capabilities.

Defence cooperation was another prominent theme, with discussions exploring closer industrial integration between Britain and France, opportunities for SMEs and the growing importance of autonomous systems.

"British and French aerospace manufacturers have worked together for generations, and those relationships remain enormously valuable. Both countries have exceptional engineering businesses, and there is considerable scope for closer cooperation as new civil and defence programmes develop."

Digital transformation also featured prominently, with artificial intelligence, smart factories and data-driven manufacturing increasingly influencing production efficiency and quality assurance.

"For a group such as ours, operating across multiple manufacturing facilities, the ability to share expertise, improve visibility and make better use of information has considerable value," Weston added.

Reflecting on the visit, Weston expressed confidence in the future of British aerospace manufacturing.

"There is a great deal of ambition across the European aerospace industry. Britain has an outstanding aerospace supply chain, built on generations of engineering experience and technical expertise.

"For ASG Aerospace, the priority is to continue investing in our people and capabilities, strengthening our customer relationships and ensuring we are well positioned to support the programmes that will define the industry's future."
