Why Aerospace? Georgina Platt Shares Her View as ASG Aerospace Celebrates National Manufacturing Day

ASG Aerospace is celebrating the careers, skills and people behind the sector this National Manufacturing Day by asking one simple question: Why Aerospace?

Taking place on Thursday 24 September, National Manufacturing Day is organised by Make UK and gives manufacturers across the country an opportunity to showcase modern industry and the careers available within it.

For ASG Aerospace Project Manager Georgina Platt, much of the appeal comes from seeing how individual components become part of something much bigger.

“What I really like about manufacturing is when you take a part from a drawing and then go through all the different layers to end up with a really complex assembly,” she said.

It is a process that Georgina believes also demonstrates the engineering expertise behind every aircraft.

“I like the complexity of aerospace. I think a lot of people underestimate what goes into building an aircraft. You start with a drawing, then there are all the layers of materials, treatments, building and assemblies.

“When you get to visit some of the big OEMs and see those massive assemblies, you can see where everything you have been working on eventually goes onto an aircraft.”

Georgina joined ASG Aerospace with experience in project management, estimating and purchasing. She was attracted by the development of the Group and the opportunity to be part of its next stage of growth.

“I was really excited by ASG Aerospace. There are a lot of things going on for the future and I’m very excited about where the company is going,” she explained.

“I’ve also found it very inclusive. Being a female in the aerospace industry, I have found it very welcoming here.”

That next generation is already arriving across ASG Aerospace, with a new intake of apprentices joining businesses across the Group this year. The apprentices are beginning their careers across engineering and manufacturing, as well as business administration, quality and supply chain, gaining practical experience alongside experienced colleagues while working towards recognised qualifications.

Their arrival comes as ASG Aerospace continues to invest in the future of its operations, with more than £10 million invested across the Group over the past two years in manufacturing technology, automation and specialist processes.

This National Manufacturing Day, Georgina’s experience offers one answer to “Why Aerospace?”: the opportunity to see precision engineering become part of an aircraft, build relationships across a global industry and develop a career alongside the technology shaping its future.
